On this day in 1996, Oasis became the fastest-selling group in UK history, selling out all 330,000 tickets for their summer tour in just 9 hours.
(What’s the Story) Morning Glory? became the highest-selling record of the decade in the UK, and it’s tour included 103 shows over several months in the UK, Europe, the US and Canada. During this time the Gallagher brothers often made tabloid headlines for their frequent fallouts, which eventually resulted in the Australia and New Zealand tours being cancelled.
The UK and Irish leg of the tour is famed for its record-breaking crowds. Almost 3 million (1 in 20 people in the UK at the time) applied for tickets to their legendary open air gigs in Knebworth, England, at which they played to 250,000 people over two nights, making them the most in-demand shows in UK history.
