Try A Little Kindness by Glenn Campbell
Mark WilkesShare
Originally written by Curt Sapaugh and Bobby Austin, Try a Little Kindness was first recorded by Glen Campbell, and it quickly became one of his signature hits. Released in 1969, the song struck a chord with listeners across genres. It climbed to #2 on the U.S. country charts, hit #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart, and even cracked the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at #23. It also made waves internationally, reaching #10 on Australia’s Go-Set chart. Not bad for a tune about simply being a better human being.

But Campbell wasn’t just a chart-topping singer—he was a monster guitar player, too. Before his solo career took off, he was a session legend in the LA-based Wrecking Crew, playing on records for everyone from Elvis Presley to Frank Sinatra, The Beach Boys, Merle Haggard, and The Monkees. If you’ve listened to a hit from the ‘60s, chances are Glen’s guitar is in there somewhere.
By the late '60s, Campbell had become a solo star in his own right. Hits like Gentle on My Mind, By the Time I Get to Phoenix, I Wanna Live, and Wichita Lineman cemented his place in music history - and earned him four Grammy Awards along the way.
Over a career spanning five decades, Glen released 64 albums, sold more than 45 million records worldwide, and racked up 12 gold albums, four platinum, and one double platinum. Not too shabby for a kid who started out picking cotton in rural Arkansas.
Sadly, Campbell was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2011 and passed away in 2017. But his legacy lives on - not just in the hits, but in the heart and honesty he brought to his music. Try a Little Kindness is a shining example of that, and it’s very cool to play on guitar.
